Canvas in Art: From Oil Paintings to Photographic Prints

15 Jun , 2022

As an artist, one of the most effective methods to showcase your skills as an artist is on canvas. Something about this material gives it an air of grandeur, from superb oil paintings to picture canvas prints. But did you realise that canvas is a relatively new addition to the art world?

Canvas provides for larger formats with ease of portability because it is lightweight and can be rolled, which is a significant characteristic of the material that remains true today. They are also less susceptible to warping and breaking than wood panels.

Australian wall art canvases are a must-have in your home. It is prevalent to order canvas online, especially from different countries with breathtaking views. Have you ever been to Australia?

If not, you should definitely order canvas prints of Australian photos online! Canvas prints make for a great addition to any home, office, or even as a gift for someone special. And with so many different sites to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect one for you.

The Origins of Canvas

Canvas was first used in the 16th century during the Italian Renaissance and was traditionally manufactured from tightly woven hemp. Canvas was especially popular among Venetian painters because it was easier to work within a humid atmosphere than frescos (which dried slowly in the lagoon) or wood panels (which absorbed moisture and warped). Given that the material was also used to manufacture sails, and the Venetians were recognised for their naval fleet, they also had a vast, cheap supply readily available.

By the 17th century, the canvas had expanded throughout Northern Europe, eventually displacing panels as the predominant support for paintings, a trend that has continued to the present day. Not limited to oil painting, artists have expanded its application to include acrylic paint, needlework, and photo canvas prints. Canvas, which is still an economical choice, enables photographers and painters to display their work professionally.

The Dominance of Photographic Canvas Prints

As printing technology advances, it’s unsurprising that an increasing number of artists are turning to digital printing. Since the 1990s, photographers have begun producing canvas prints in the same way as professional painters do. Giclée (a French term meaning “to spray”), or fine art inkjet printing, has enabled photographers to showcase their work in previously unattainable levels of colour and quality.

Even if you are not a skilled painter, technology has made creating affordable canvas prints more accessible than ever. With high-quality printing, images from critical times in your life can be mounted on canvas and displayed directly on your wall, creating an attractive way to add a touch of class to your house.

Canvas prints are simple to create and may be constructed from virtually anything – a photograph, a piece of digital art, or a scan of your child’s favourite drawing. Durable and available in various sizes, these inexpensive canvas prints enable anyone to experience the sensation of being a master artist without ever picking up a brush.

Spooktober is here! Well, if I missed celebrating Halloween last year (stuck at home with 20-day old Jason), I am not going to skip on the fun this year. And keeping the kid in me happy won’t be my usual excuse for doing so. I’ve got a curious one-year old now, whose main job is to learn, explore and experience everything that is new to him. I am also lucky to have a bunch of close mommy friends with toddlers to join in the party. So, I thought that it would be a good idea if I shared out loud with you some tips and ideas on how to hold a Halloween party for toddling bubs who don’t end up spooked up, crying their eyes out amidst the ghost hunt game.

The Crafty Housewife’s Christmas Gifts Sorted

Christmas Gifts

Let me be honest with you, as I have always been! I hate Christmas! I don’t hate the smell of oranges and cinnamon, I don’t dislike family gatherings and it’s not even about Christmas cleaning (which I hate a little bit too). I hate Christmas because of the “All I Want for Christmas” song, Santa Claus and because it’s such an industry and so commercialised that, media nowadays would have us believe that the best gifts are the ones you purchase at the department store. The best gift to me is the one made with love and here I’ll give you a few easy ideas to make all your friends and loved ones happy. More…
