How To Survive In London

7 Jan , 2013

I know… Long time, no blog updates, but I have a perfectly good explanation for this. As most of you know Steven and I went to London for our New Year’s adventure and I can tell you straight away we had an amazing time! I have so much to tell you, that I don’t know where to start from. As usually, I will give you some tips and pointers to keep in mind if you are planning to visit London anytime soon. So here’s the story of two Aussies in London in winter!

Plan Ahead

If you haven’t already done that you should visit my post on How We Planned Our New Year’s Eve Getaway Part I and Part II. I’ve done a pretty amazing research and I will tell you why it is so amazing. As it turns out without a good plan you are a dead man walking in London. My research was a life-saver! Without a plan you will start paying a fortune for admissions, you are not going to know which attraction to visit and you will get absolutely exhausted to run around with the crowd or queue like crazy. I can’t emphasize enough how important planning is, especially if this is your first time in London! There will be some things that won’t go as planned, but in most cases, these will be good things, so don’t get disappointed. I never planned to attend a stand-up comedy show, but at the end of the day we had a great laugh one evening.

As mentioned in my previous posts, planning is essential, because you know which attractions you want to visit and when. Figure this out in advance, because you can easily buy your tickets online. Buying tickets online hides many benefits and very few disadvantages.

Benefits:

You save money. A lot of money! We had a 40% discount for buying our tickets for Madamme Tussaud’s, London Eye, London Aquarium and London Dungeon. We had a discount for buying tickets for London Zoo and Tower Of London too.
No queuing! Buying an online ticket doesn’t always mean you will get a fast track admission, but it does help a great deal. For instance, It doesn’t apply to London Eye and London Dungeon, but we went inside the Aquarium and Madame Tussaud’s instantly as well as in London Zoo.
Having the ticket prior to your arrival will guarantee you an entrance. Sometimes there are large groups or just so many tourists that all the tickets are finished or for some reason you are refused admission. Getting your ticket ready helps everything to go as planned.

Disadvantages:

You have to print them in advance. Something was wrong with our London Zoo tickets when we left and they send us new ones. We found it very difficult to find a place to print it in London as it was also a Sunday, so Stephen had to register for the local library to be able to print our tickets. It was a fun story, but if you are planning to buy your tickets online make sure you don’t lose anything and you have it all printed neatly.
– You have to know that, for instance, on the 14th of March you will be in London Zoo – sun, rain or snow you have to be there on that date and that’s it, unless you want to queue for another good hour and a half.

If you want to have a good time in London prepare a lot of money and forget to count because everything there is created to make you spend a fortune. As Stephen said there are four reasons to visit London and it is sometimes impossible to combine all of them together in a single visit: Sightseeing, Shopping, Sports And Arts and Food.

 What to Eat?

If you are visiting the United Kingdom, you have to try fish & chips, steak and pastry. These are like a must-try! In addition, you can also try various other cuisines as London is one of the most diverse cities I have ever seen! Planning ahead is sometimes crucial even when it comes to food. If you want to enjoy the most out of your pub experience go visit the websites of some really famous pubs. Check whether they have some vouchers and discounts. We ate for 25 quid (I speak like British now, what do you know!), which included 2 main courses and one bottle of house wine. Everything was brilliant and we had an amazing time! They have Nando’s there too! But if you are asking someone make sure they are explaining to you the way to Nando’s, not to Chando’s!

 Mind the Gap

If you are visiting London prepare to spend a fortune on travel cards and tickets. Get a week travel card and don’t forget to mind the gap. Or so I was told, 384902 times, while I was in one of the many trains. If you want to get the most out of your London experience make sure to check about regular works done on the tracks. These cause for some parts of the underground to be closed for maintenance. This could interfere with your plan and you might have to find alternative ways to get around. Check the official website for updates. In addition don’t forget to look for cars coming from the opposite side of the street and mind the gap. Safety is crucial. Look out for each other. Steven and I were ill most of the time, because of the weather difference, but luckily for us that’s the worst that happened while we were there. A group of Spanish tourists, however, cannot say the same – they were hit by a bus, because they were looking the other way.

I think these are the most important things to share. Enjoy yourself while in London – feed the squirrels, take long walks, go buy yourself something and treat yourself with good food. In the next post, I will share some more info and tips on how to prepare for New Year outside. If you ever have the chance to visit a capital city during fireworks, coming soon are a few tips to have a good time. So, don’t miss out.
