How To Make A Rental Property Your Own

18 Nov , 2014

For many people when they move into a rental property, they aren’t quite sure how to bring their own personality and decor into the space because they are concerned about drilling holes, wiring for electrical items like pendant lights, ceiling lights and outdoor lighting solutions.

The great news is, you don’t have to drill one hole or get any professional tradesperson in to install different lighting solutions for you to be able to personalise your new abode. It’s just a matter of utilizing what is currently there and including some unique finishing touches.

After all, when it comes to rental properties you don’t really want to make any permanent changes regardless of whether or not the landlord is happy for you to do so. Everything you invest in, you want to be able to take with you when the times comes.

Great ideas for decorating rental properties

  1. For the walls – Use high quality adhesive hooks that can easily be removed from the walls to display framed photographs, artworks and other items. You can buy different ones depending on how heavy the item is too.

  2. Forget about the permanent fixtures– Things like door knobs, tap handles and ceiling lights should be left as is. Instead, focus on how you can personalise each room by adding different textures, textiles and lighting accents.

  3. Use portable lighting solutions to light up the living area, kitchen and bedrooms. Table lamps and floor lamps are a wonderful way to compliment existing decor and create ambience in any room. Invest in a few lighting pieces which are timeless and elegant, that way you can take them with you wherever you go and they’ll also compliment the existing decor of your next home later on down the track.

Note: Lamps are particularly good for this because you can always change the lamp shade to give any room in your home an instant lift.

  1. Use different textiles to create themes in each room– Throw rugs, cushions and floor rugs are a great way to incorporate colour into any space and really add your own personal touch to your new lounge room, dining room, kitchen and bedroom. Once again, these items are portable, so you can take them with you to your next home in years to come.

  2. Indoor plants liven up any space– Plants not only rejuvenate any room in the home but they also purify the air. They make wonderful centrepieces for tables and unlike cut flowers you don’t need to constantly replace them.

With a little care and thoughtful planning you’ll find that there are plenty of exciting ways to make your new rental property your own, without painting, drilling or hard wiring a thing. Have fun with your new decorating project and enjoy living in your new home!
